Ranveer Singh Kantara Controversy: Earlier this month, actor Ranveer Singh apologised for mimicking Rishab Shetty’s intense Daiva Chavundi scene from Kantara. Ranveer Singh – who is currently being lauded for his impeccable performance in Dhurandhar – had recreated the Daiva scene on stage during the closing ceremony of a film festival in Goa held on November 30. Since Ranveer’s act triggered social media backlash, he took to Instagram to clarify that his intention was only to “highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film”. “Actor to actor, I know how much it takes to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which he has my utmost admiration,” he had posted. Days after his apology, Kantara director-actor Rishab Shetty has now shared his reaction. He explained why he feels ‘uncomfortable’ when somebody tries to enact his culture.
What did Rishab Shetty say?
Rishab Shetty didn’t mention Ranveer Singh’s name while sharing his thoughts. “That makes me uncomfortable. While much of the film is cinema and performance, the daiva element is sensitive and sacred. Wherever I go, I request people not to perform it on stage or mock it. It is emotionally deeply connected to us,” Rishabh was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times. For the unversed, Ranveer called the character “female ghost” and stuck his tongue out while enacting the sequence. Rishab Shetty was seen laughing beside him. Ranveer also joked, “Anybody here want to see me in Kantara 3? Tell this guy,” Dhurandhar star said while pointing at Rishabh.
How did netizens react to Ranveer Singh’s viral act?
As expected, Ranveer Singh viral “imitation” of Daiva sequence left many irked. As soon as the video was out on social media, Ranveer Singh started getting slammed.
One comment read, “Boycott upcoming Ranveer Singh movie Dhurandhar. He should not make fun of Goddess and Daivasa.” Next comment read, “This is why everyone despises those fools who gained attention before the pandemic and still cling to their fame from Kachrawood. What a foolish person he is.” Another user said, “We DON’T want to see Ranveer in the next Kantara movie.”
Rishab Shetty had warned Ranveer Singh before his viral act?
According to a source mentioned by Bangalore Times, “Ranveer came down from the stage to greet the guests, including Rajinikanth and Rishab (Shetty). The moment he saw Rishab, he got excited and began mimicking the Daiva, which Rishab asked him to stop – though politely.”
Even though Rishab had warned Ranveer, Dhurandhar actor recreated the moment again. The source further said, “His intention wasn’t wrong, but referring to the Daiva as a ‘female ghost’ and performing the act while wearing shoes shocked many. Rishab stayed calm and chose not to escalate it at such a high-profile event.”
