Ekta Kapoor web series row: Mumbai Police get show-cause notice from court for missing probe report deadline

The Mumbai police were given a show-cause notice by a court on Friday for failing to submit an inquiry report in a criminal complaint against television and film producer Ekta Kapoor for allegedly demeaning Indian soldiers in one of her web series. The cops missed the May 9 deadline for submitting the investigative report. In February, the Bandra magistrate’s court ordered the Khar police to investigate the allegation against Ekta and others in accordance with section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The police were required to submit a report by May 9 to the magistrate’s court. As the police failed to submit the report on time, a show-cause notice was issued.

Who filed the case against Ekta?

YouTuber, Vikas Pathak commonly known as ‘Hindustani bhau’, filed the complaint. Vikas named Ekta’s parents, Shobha and Jeetendra, as well as her OTT portal, Alt Balaji, in the case.

What was the complaint about?

An Alt Balaji web series featured an “illicit sexual act” by a military officer in one of its episodes, according to the complaint made through advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh. According to the complaint, Vikas found the episode in May 2020.

“The accused have stooped to a cheap low and shamelessly targeted the dignity and pride of our country by depicting Indian Army military uniform in the illicit sexual act with national emblem on it,” the complaint said.

Ekta faced FIR in 2024 for…

The filmmaker has also encountered legal problems about content on her streaming service before. An FIR was filed against her in 2024 after Abhilash Pandey, a BJP MLA from Jabalpur, alleged that she had shown “bold content involving children” on the web series Gandii Baat.

Regarding her career, Ekta Kapoor is presently engaged in the production of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2. Amar Upadhyay will reprise his role as Mihir in this new season, while Smriti Irani will return as Tulsi. According to reports, there will be 150 episodes in this new season.
