Former NCT member Taeil sentenced 3.5 years in jail for sexual assault with additional court-imposed conditions

Former NCT and NCT 127 member Moon Tae-il, also known as Taeil, has been sentenced to three years and six months in jail for serious sexual assault, according to K-media. The Criminal Division 26 of the Seoul Central District Court rendered the decision on July 10. The court cited flight risk concerns as the reason for Taeil’s immediate arrest following the sentencing. Apart from the sentencing, the court has also ordered some conditions- completion of a 40-hour sexual violence therapy program, public exposure of personal information and five-year work prohibition in child and youth-related facilities.

The prosecution had asked for a seven-year jail term for each defendant, highlighting the seriousness of the crime. The victim was purposefully put in a cab headed to a distant location from the crime site, according to the prosecution, to keep her away from remembering specifics or aiding in the police investigation. They pointed out that the defendants purposefully took advantage of the victim’s status as a foreign national.
How Taeil’s legal team responded?
Taeil’s legal team responded by expressing regret and pointing out that he had personally apologised through his court-appointed lawyer. His involvement in psychological counseling and preventive education programs following the occurrence was emphasised in his defense. His team also mentioned family difficulties, pointing out that Taeil was only able to provide for the family by working part-time at a friend’s restaurant after his mother quit her job.

In his final statement to the court, Taeil said, “I am deeply sorry to everyone I have disappointed. If granted leniency, I will treat it as the last chance of my life and do everything I can to contribute meaningfully to society,” as quoted by the Korean media.
