Mandira Bedi fought with fans over her relationship with Mihir in Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? Actress recalls, 'Fans used to get too…'

Actress Mandira Bedi – a familiar face to most households in India for her iconic role in the classic soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi – recently revealed in an interview that fans used to confront her about the character she played in the show. In a recent interview with Zoom, legendary actress Mandira Bedi revealed some shocking details about her time while shooting for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

The actress played the role of Dr. Mandira Kapadia, a woman who comes between Tulsi, played by actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani, and Mihir, played by actor Ronit Roy. The show’s extramarital affair storyline, which was combined with Mandira Bedi and other cast members’ natural and flawless acting, made the script give a lifelike feel and drew massive attention from viewers who couldn’t as many weren’t able to separate real from reel.

Mandira Bedi said in her interview that people asked her to “leave Mihir because Mihir belonged to Tulsi,” to which she would respond with, “Hey, back off! Mihir and Tulsi are together onscreen, and I am playing a character. They took it personally. That’s how people get involved in shows that are popular and that are these daily soaps.”

While this was a wild encounter, it wasn’t Mandira’s first encounter with fame and stardom. Mandira climbed the stairs to fame with her titular role in Shanti, which was hailed as India’s first daily soap and aired on Doordarshan in the mid-90s. The show turned out to be a game-changer in Mandira’s career, as within six months of doing Shanti, she was offered a role in what would become one of Bollywood’s most iconic films, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Mandira further revealed that it was Karan Johar himself who called her from Yash Chopra’s office to cast her as Preeti in the upcoming film, which later became a sensational and cult classic.
