With the final golf major now in the books, fans are now eagerly anticipating the next important date on the calendar – the Ryder Cup. Regarded as the sport’s most prestigious international team competition, it will bring together many of the finest players in the world to compete for the famous trophy.
All the bookmakers will be setting their odds for the Ryder Cup, one of golf’s most popular events. Coming around just every two years, individual pride is set aside for three days as the cream of Europe and the US team up to battle their transatlantic foes. Golf fans are set for another enthralling spectacle.

Where and When?
The 45th Ruder Cup is heading back to the US, with the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York hosting this prestigious event. It will be the 23rd clash between the US and Europe since the Great Britain and Ireland team expanded its selection remit in 1979. Since then, the US has won nine titles to Europe’s 13.
Golf fans around the world will be glued to the action from Friday, September 26th until Sunday, September 28th. It will be the first time that the Ryder Cup has ever been played at this course – and the first time the competition has returned to the state of New York for 20 years, when the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester had that honor.
What is the Format?
One of the aspects of the Ryder Cup that makes it so fascinating for golf fans new and old is that it is played using a match play format, as opposed to stroke play. That means that points for the margin of victory are counted, rather than the strokes. It all means that oftentimes the tension continues to the very last hole.
Day one of the 2025 Ryder Cup will see four foursome matches and four fourball matches. There will be another chance on day two to claw back a lead as the same format takes the players into day three. The final day is usually the most exciting, as it consists of 12 singles matches to determine the eventual champions.
Who’s Playing?
With a couple of months still to play before the Ryder Cup tees off at the end of September, there is still a lot of talk about who exactly will be pulling on the two team uniforms. Both the US and Europe will select the top six players from the Ryder Cup points list, with six more on each side coming through captain’s picks.
Scottie Scheffler made certain of his inclusion back in June, while Rory McIlroy has also already qualified for the European team. The rest of the qualification slots are still available, but the likes of Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, and Russell Henley look set to make the US team. Golfers of the caliber of Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tyrell Hatton look good for the Europe team.
All qualified players will be known by the middle of August, with the US captain Keegan Bradley making his picks on August 24th and Europe captain Luke Donald confirming his selections on September 1st. LIV golfers will be eligible for the teams, although European hopefuls must also be members of the DP World Tour.
Who is Going to Win?
After 44 Ryder Cup matches, the ongoing wins total is all square, with the US and Europe both on 22 apiece. That European total does include the 22 wins recorded by the Great Britain and Great Britain and Ireland teams before 1979.
The US will head into this year’s match as the slight favorites, but the teams are expected to be remarkably well-matched. If the match goes the way of the last five events, it will be the Americans who are victorious. Not since 2012 has either team won on its opponent’s soil – that was when Europe claimed the trophy at Medinah Country Club in Illinois.
Looking back over the last 20 or so years, it has been Europe that has been more successful, however. Of the 11 matches played since the turn of the century, Europe has won on eight occasions. With the overall competition lead at stake as well as this year’s trophy, the match play is set to be intense. It could really go down to the very last singles match before we know who has won.
Where Will the Next Ryder Cup Be Held?
Without getting too far ahead of ourselves, after this year’s Ryder Cup has come to a close, international golf fans will have to wait two more years before everything gets going again – this time at the Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland. It will be the second time the country has hosted the event.
Following that, it has recently been announced that the 2029 Ryder Cup will be played at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota – the second time that course has had the privilege. After that, the event will return to Europe once more, with the Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort in Girona, Spain hosting. It will be the first time the Ryder Cup has returned to Spain since the legendary Seve Ballesteros famously captained Europe to victory in 1997.
