Design and features

Don’t be fooled by the compact size of the Speras U1 Multifunction Clip Light! While it’s only slightly larger than a 9 volt battery, the build is remarkably dense and rugged. This little flashlight has IP65 water & dust resistance in addition to impact resistance, so that it will hold up to rougher activities.

You’ve got three different methods for carrying this wee beastie right out of the box. There’s a heavy-duty integrated clip for attaching it to whatever’s handy. This clip is backed with a beefy spring to help keep it where you put it.

The second option is a built-in magnet for attaching to metal surfaces. Here I have it stuck to my car door in the garage.

The third option includes this bike loop that comes with your kit. The clip has a hole cut at the top that you can string this through to attach to your bike or a bag. You can also clip it through the loop as I show in the second picture below.

There are many, many options for lighting available in this little device. Behold the combinations as mapped out in the user manual!

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 16

All of that programming comes from the only two buttons on the device, both of which are found on the side as shown below. The top one manages the flashlight (on top) and the white floodlight (on the front face). The bottom one manages the color modes, which activate the floodlight and those little lights on the sides in different color patterns. An assortment of sub-features are then set through single clicks, double clicks, or press-and-hold options to get to all the capabilities. I’ll outline some of them as we go, but you will need a little practice to get used to all the more advanced functions.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 7

Let’s start with the flashlight. This is the bit on the top of the unit. You push the top side button to turn it on and off.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 6

When the light is on, you can press and hold that button to adjust between three power modes ranging from 40 lumens and a 19-meter range up to 500 lumens and a 75-meter range.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 11

If you double click that top button, it switches to the floodlight mode on the front face of the unit. This runs at a lower power than the flashlight, but you’ll get a much wider cone of illumination.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 8

Like the flashlight mode, this light can also be adjusted between three power modes ranging from 30 lumens and a 10 meter range up to 300 lumens and a 22 meter range.

Whichever setting was last chosen is stored in memory so you don’t have to keep toggling to get to your preferred setting. For each option here you’ll get 1-8 hours of continuous use based on the option and the power level you have chosen. There is also an eco mode you can set that runs either light at very low power for up to 25 hours of continuous use on a full charge.

Moving on to the colored light options, this cycles through a series of different patterns with 6 RGB colors. The same sets of double clicks and click/holds allow you to choose a single color (red, blue, green, orange, purple, ice blue), color cycling with different patterns/timing, and an emergency blinking mode.

As with the spotlight and floodlight options, the flashlight saves the last selected mode so you don’t have to work through all the options to get to your preferred setting.

The Speras U1 Multifunction Clip Light has a rubber sealed tab on the side opposite the controls. Peel that back to access the USB-C charging port, and put it back in place to prevent moisture from getting in and ruining your evening.

The flashlight also has a motion activation function. See those two little sensors below the floodlight on the front face? If motion activation is set, you can pass your hand in front of those sensors to turn the light on or off. This function works for a pre-selected light mode, and requires a bit of a complicated combination of button pushing to set up. You’ll need to refer to the manual for directions.

Finally, the flashlight has a lock mode to prevent it from accidentally turning on in your bag or pocket. This is accomplished through an extra-long hold (4 seconds) of the light button, and is deactivated the same way.

Performance

I’m a bit surprised at how powerful the Speras U1 Multifunction Clip Light is. I’m also concerned that my neighbors think aliens landed in my backyard while I was testing this thing.

Here’s a shot of the flashlight mode from my back deck. That bamboo is about 20 feet away. The first pic is the low brightness setting, while the second pic is the high setting. It packs some serious punch for a tiny little light!

Here are the same two settings at closer range for a visual reference.

Floodlight mode presents a wider cone of light at a lower power. This thing still illuminates a good chunk of my backyard in the low power mode.

The floodlight mode is a great feature for evening walks given the small size and that strong clip. Here I have it clipped to the rig of my Goruck for some evening rucking.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 26

Check out how tiny it is in this closeup! The small size makes it easy to clip to a strap, a pocket, or a loop on your bag/belt. You can also string a cord through the hole in the clip or attach it to a lanyard for easy carry. I could use that rubber strap to attach it to my molle as well.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 25

Fire up that floodlight and you get some serious lumens to work with. This is at max brightness.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 28

While the light is plenty powerful for the size, the battery duration is something you should consider based on your intended use. The floodlight will run for 8 hours/2 hours/1 hour on Low/Medium/High settings respectively with a full charge. The flashlight is 4 hours /1.5 hours / 1 hour at the same settings. While you can go in “ECO” mode for 25 hours, it’s a very small fraction of the brightness you’re seeing in these pics (like a night light). The net result is that this light is great for shorter operations, but don’t expect it to run all night depending on your intended use.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 29

The color modes are just fine, but seem more gimmicky to me unless you’re using the emergency mode or setting some sort of signal.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 23

The magnet function comes in very handy. That’s not a space station in the pic below… that’s my Weber kettle grill! This light is super handy for night cooking. I’ve been using it on both my kettle and gas grill. Just make sure the surface isn’t too hot.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 24

It’s also super handy for use in the workshop or as an emergency light in the car with that magnet. There’s plenty of power to light things up to change a flat tire or flash a roadside assistance signal.

Speras U1MultifunctionClipLight 30

The lock mode is a nice added feature to keep the flashlight from accidentally popping on if you have it stuffed in a bag, a toolbox or a pocket. The motion sensor is a little more iffy for me. It triggers on or off with a wave near the sensors, which may be useful for certain applications. I did not find the trigger to be consistent, however, so it didn’t always operate as intended in my case.

The combination of required button clicks and click-holds can be a little maddening to get to all of the features, but the good news is that most of the basic functions are easy to access. The good news is that you can get access to a digital copy of the instruction manual so that you never lose it.

Final thoughts

The Speras U1 Multifunction Clip Light is a great addition to your everyday carry (EDC) gear. It’s small enough to pack for a variety of uses, but packs a punch for its size. Multiple light modes & carry options add surprising versatility. Just don’t lose track of the manual if you want to play with all the customizations.

What I like about the Speras U1 Multifunction Clip Light

  • Super compact & durable
  • Clip, magnet & lanyard configurations enhance the usability for multiple applications
  • Lots of power in a small package
  • Many, many options for lighting

What needs to be improved?

  • Complicated instructions to get to all the features
  • Battery life is good for the size, but not for extended use between charges
