Trex Company, Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of high-performance, wood-alternative decking and railing, has released its 2024 Sustainability Report. The report highlights the company’s ongoing leadership in recycling, environmental stewardship and social responsibility – values that have been at the heart of Trex for more than 30 years.
“I am proud of how Trex has seamlessly integrated sustainability into our business—not as an add-on, but as a core strategy,” said Bryan Fairbanks, President and CEO of Trex Company. “Our sustainability program is built into our distinctive brand, enhances resilience, and drives stronger returns for our shareholders. This makes sustainability a win-win for both our business and society at large.”
The company’s 2024 Sustainability Report charts progress across the board, including:
- Commitment to Circularity: Trex composite decking is manufactured by blending reclaimed timber fibre s— such as sawdust and agricultural by-products— with recycled plastic film from everyday items like pallet wrap, shopping bags and consumer packaging. This process keeps millions of kilos of waste out of landfill each year. In 2024 alone, Trex sourced more than 450 million kilograms of reclaimed polyethylene (PE) film and timber scrap, including 171 million kilograms of waste plastic, making Trex one of North America’s largest recyclers of PE. Importantly, an estimated 94% of the reclaimed timber came from certified sources or agricultural waste, with ongoing collaboration with suppliers to validate and update certification records.
- Innovative Products: Trex decking and railing products are engineered for durability, aesthetic appeal and long-lasting performance, with limited warranties of up to 50 years. The Trex Enhance range, designed and priced to compete directly with timber, comes with a 25-year warranty — roughly double the lifespan of typical timber decking in outdoor conditions. This extended longevity reduces the need for replacements and lowers the overall environmental impact.
- Efficiency in Manufacturing: Trex continues to maximise resource efficiency, recycling nearly 100% of its production scrap. In 2024, the company disposed of approximately 17,112 tonnes of non-hazardous waste — a 6.7% increase on 2023— while recycling of non-hazardous waste grew by 95% to 7,528 tonnes, driven by higher overall volumes and improved tracking of recycled streams. Trex also recycled 31% of its general waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
The report also outlines forward-looking initiatives, including expanded end-of-life product recycling pilots and new sourcing strategies to build resilience amid growing demand for recycled materials.
“Sustainability has always been integral to who we are,” said Amy Fernandez, Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer of Trex Company. “Our 2024 report reflects our unwavering commitment to responsible growth, innovation, and continuous improvement.”
