At a CNN town hall, an audience member asked Bernie Sanders and AOC why, if rural, mostly Republican areas are disproportionately affected by Affordable Care Act premium increases under the Big Beautiful Bill, Democrats shouldn’t just let Republicans face the consequences of their own policies.
Well, they had something to say about that.
Bernie replied first. “… This really annoys me about Trump, he’s dividing this country. Why would I not?” he said. “We are Americans, but you think I would feel okay if somebody in a Republican state died because they couldn’t get health care? I would hope not. I hope nobody feels that.”

Then, AOC chimed in. “I think it also speaks to a big difference between someone like Trump and someone like me or someone like Bernie, which is that Trump believes that if you don’t vote for him, he doesn’t have to be your leader. That if you didn’t vote for him, that you don’t deserve good things to happen to you,” she said.
“I don’t care if someone voted for me or not. I don’t care if someone is a Republican, or an Independent, or a Democrat. I don’t care if someone likes me or not,” she continued. “That will never change the fact that I’m going to fight for them to have health care.”
“I want MAGA to have health care. I want MAGA to be paid a living wage,” she said.

“But he doesn’t want people who are Democrats, or he doesn’t want people based on their political affiliation, to benefit,” she continued. “And that is the difference between a strongman and an authoritarian, and a leader of a democracy.”

The video quickly went viral on social media, with many Democrats praising the message:
“Totally and completely correct, and this messaging is exactly how to win the broad base we need to win,” one wrote.
“The is a winning message,” another said.
“this is some of the smartest, most human, most f***ing baller messaging i’ve seen in a while. this is the future of the Democratic Party,” another declared.

Someone else wrote, “This is the thing MAGA doesn’t get. Most of the time, we’re fighting for their rights and benefits. MAGA disproportionately needs access to healthcare. Many red states need FEMA. They need immigrant workers. Science treats their cancers, high blood pressure, and diabetes.”
“This messaging is extremely effective. It’s about empathy for all people regardless of who they voted for, instead of shaming people just because you didn’t win an election. If Democrats actually want to resonate with voters, they should communicate like this,” another said.
Even some conservatives applauded the statement. “I think AOC is one of the best politicians in the business. I am very much not aligned with her policies, but she’s incredibly good at her job,” one wrote.
Naturally, though, some say they’re still “not buying it.”
