Something’s stirring inside Aston Martin’s Formula 1 camp, as major changes are on the horizon for 2026, and the team is working diligently behind the scenes to get things right. Still, legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey has already spotted a few warning signs that he doesn’t like.
Known for his brilliant mind and blunt honesty, Newey believes Aston Martin needs to be careful not to fall into the same traps he has seen before at Red Bull, and his words carry serious weight since they come from someone who has built numerous title-winning cars.
What Is Adrian Newey’s ‘Déjà Vu’ Moment?
Newey is the sport’s most successful car designer to date with a jaw-dropping 26 world titles under his belt. After leaving Red Bull earlier this year, he joined Aston Martin as managing technical partner and shareholder. He has been helping shape the team’s 2026 car alongside Enrico Cardile, Bob Bell and team principal Andy Cowell.
Aston Martin has big dreams, having invested heavily in a new factory and wind tunnel facilities, and has been busy recruiting top talent from across the paddock. However, the reality on track has been far from perfect. With four races left this season, the team sits seventh in the Constructors’ Championship, being just ahead of Haas and Sauber.
When Newey was asked recently about how things are going, he admitted feeling a sense of “déjà vu” from his early days at Red Bull when the team still carried the old habits of Jaguar Racing, where he had noticed people losing faith in their ability to win.
“So Red Bull, when I started, was the ashes of Team Jaguar, that had been under Ford management for many years and had never had any significant success, and so, people had started to lose belief that they could ever win a race,” he said via the “James Allen on F1” podcast. “Once you stop believing that you can do that, then, everything goes wrong, because complacency sets in, laziness sets in, lack of self-belief creeps in.”
That’s not exactly what the Aston Martin crew would want to hear, but it’s a reality check that might just push the team in the right direction. He further added, “If you’re not careful, blame culture can set in as well. And so that was quite a difficult thing to overturn at Red Bull. I won’t say too much, but there is a bit of deja vu at the moment.”
Newey’s Blueprint for Success
Newey’s approach is simple yet powerful, as he believes success in Formula 1 comes from teamwork and communication more than anything else. He admitted that every team has three main departments: aerodynamics, mechanical design, and vehicle dynamics. According to him, getting these groups to work together as one is the real secret behind a race-winning car.
He also warned about putting too much faith in computers and simulations. “As teams have got bigger, then of course, communication becomes more and more of a challenge,” he said. “I think more and more as the teams get bigger, people are not questioning enough. They believe what a computer spews out, a set of results, and they automatically believe in that, and they don’t question the fact.”
He added, “You can’t blame a flipping computer, it’s what you’ve put into it, but if you haven’t put the right things in, you can’t expect the right things out. And that, I think, is something that we are increasingly becoming complacent to and making mistakes as a result.”
Fernando Alonso has already praised Newey’s influence since joining the team earlier this year. With the 2026 regulations promising a significant reset, the Spaniard hopes the partnership can bring the Silverstone-based team closer to the front of the field.
Newey isn’t promising instant success, but his words demonstrate that he understands what it takes to transform a struggling team into a winning one. His message to everyone at Aston Martin is to maintain faith, believe in the process, and continue pushing forward.
