The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction was the right time for Gujarat Titans (GT) to pick Jason Holder as they had the perfect Kedar Jadhav plan in mind for the West Indian. The franchise had a fourth-place finish, but their presence in the playoffs was cut short when they lost in the eliminator match.
Parthiv Patel Explains Why Jason Holder Was Their First Choice
Parthiv Patel talking to media spoke about IANS and said Jason Holder was always in their plans and emphasizing that thecludr is a strategic decision. The acquisition of Holder came after they parted ways with Gerald Coetzee and Karim Janat, which increased GT’s pace-bowling depth.
Patel corroborated, “Jason Holder was not a backup; he was the first choice for the Gujarat Titans. He was always part of our IPL 2026 auction plans and our first choice. An all-rounder was necessary for how we prepare our squad and play. The scenario of thinking we would go for Jason Holder if we missed another player was never there. He has always been our first plan.”
Parthiv Patel, the assistant coach of Gujarat Titans, says when they got Jason Holder, “Look, we have followed Jason Holder for the last one-and-a-half years. He has been magnificent in T20 cricket. All the leagues he has played, he has been amazing.”
The IPL 2022 champions, who had a purse of INR 12.9 crores, initially bid for Venkatesh Iyer, but Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the battle, signing the Madhya Pradesh all-rounder for INR 7 crores. Jason Holder, on the contrary, remained unsold in the first round. However, a fierce bidding war broke out between GT and five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the second round at the IPL 2026 auction to acquire his services. The Titans ultimately signed him for a mind-boggling INR 7 crores.
Holder is a versatile bat and ball player who plays the all-rounder role perfectly, coming along with his powerplay and death overs performance.
Jason Holder Need & Exceptional Record in 2025
The IPL 2026 auction saw several franchises, including the Gujarat Titans, on the lookout for impactful and tested pace-bowling all-rounders. In the case of Cameron Green and Venkatesh Iyer, they were the most expected high-budget buys, but Jason Holder was also one of the most wanted players, especially after the remarkable season he had in 2025. GT had released a few of their all-rounders, already creating room and cash to get the West Indies all-rounder by letting go of Sherfane Rutherford (traded to Mumbai Indians), Karin Janat, and Gerald Coetzee.
Thus, the scarceness of true pace-bowling all-rounders escalated Holder’s demand, even with the Impact Player rule in force.
The 2025 season of Holder was nothing short of brilliant: besides 90 wickets at a 21.54 average and an 8.41 economy rate in 63 innings, he made 819 runs at a 25.59 average and a 159.96 strike rate in 50 T20 innings.
Over the course of the CPL 2025, he picked up 13 wickets in 10 matches with a 7.80 economy and tallied 267 runs at a 38.14 average and a 167.92 strike rate. He got 9 wickets in 8 games in MLC 2025 and in PSL 2025, he was 15 in 8. In T20Is he got 16 wickets in 12 matches, being wicketless only twice, dismissing in his last nine consecutive innings. This powerful showing makes it hard not to consider him for T20 World Cup 2026.
