New Superman Transformation Redefines His Kryptonite Weakness

Superman is nearly as defined by Kryptonite as he is by his powers, with his greatest weakness standing as one of his most iconic traits. Traditionally, Green Kryptonite has been fairly simple in how it threatens the Man of Steel, but that’s no longer the case. A shocking new body horror transformation reveals just how disturbingly the deadly rock can be weaponized.

Those following Dan Slott and Rafael Albuquerque’s Superman Unlimited series know Kryptonite has reached a whole new threat level, with radioactive shards of Clark’s home planet flooding Earth’s streets and falling into the hands of villains and even common criminals.

Yet it isn’t the story itself that shows how traumatizing Kryptonite can be weaponized, but a hardcore variant cover by Nimit Malavia for Superman Unlimited #7, where the outside threat of the glowing green rock becomes an inside one.

The Threat Within: Superman Unlimited Art Flips the Script on Kryptonite

Main Cover by Rafael Albuquerque for Superman Unlimited #5 (2025)

Malavia’s cover for Superman Unlimited #7 is a body horror masterpiece, transforming Kryptonite from an external threat into an internal one. The glowing green rocks erupt from Superman’s skin and mouth, evoking a scene reminiscent of Xenomorphs bursting from their hosts in Alien. An image that is both shocking and disturbingly visceral.

A truly great piece of art evokes emotion, and this cover is no exception. Viewers may feel sympathy, horror, or even nausea imagining the pain Superman endures. It also provokes curiosity: how was Kryptonite weaponized to cause such a gruesome internal transformation, pushing beyond the limits of conventional threats?

Superman has faced Kryptonite ingestion before, usually when it’s sprayed in aerosol form. However, this cover goes far beyond typical exposure, suggesting the radioactive rock is crystallizing inside his body, encasing him from within. The image is terrifying, illustrating a truly horrifying evolution of Kryptonite’s lethal potential.

Since this is only a cover, there’s no way to know if this instance of Kryptonite body horror will appear in the actual story. Still, it’s a concept fans would likely be intrigued by, as it raises the question of how Superman could possibly combat a threat that exists inside his own body.

Superman Unlimited #1 revealed Clark’s new golden form, which allows him to resist Kryptonite’s effects temporarily. Theoretically, he could trigger this ability to fight off the Kryptonite poisoning, but physically removing the crystalized rocks from his body would remain a major challenge, likely too gruesome for a non–Black Label Superman comic.

Superman Unlimited #7 is available November 19, 2025, from DC Comics!
