Zoë Kravitz Unintentionally Insults Austin Butler’s Past Show The Carrie Diaries

Zoë Kravitz accidentally insulted Austin Butler’s former show, The Carrie Diaries. Set in the 1980s, The Carrie Diaries focused on Carrie Bradshaw’s life when she was starting her life and career in New York City while still in high school. Before becoming a movie star, Butler starred in The Carrie Diaries’ two seasons as Sebastian Kydd.

Since And Just Like That’s ending just aired, the Sex and the City franchise is in the spotlight. While fans have been focused on And Just Like That’s cast, a fascinating and hilarious moment has suddenly reminded fans of the other Sex and the City spin-off. The promotional tour for Kravitz and Butler’s movie, Caught Stealing, has created a viral moment.

In August 2025, Kravitz and Butler took part in one of Vanity Fair‘s series of co-star Lie Detector Test videos. During the video, Butler asked Kravitz to choose whether And Just Like That or The Carrie Diaries was the better Sex and the City spin-off. Instead of simply answering, Kravitz stated that she wouldn’t choose either show.

Neither. Leave that show alone. Everybody just stop.

During a previous Lie Detector Test video for her movie Blink Twice, Kravitz proved she is a Sex and the City superfan by completing quotes from the original series. That made what happened next extremely awkward. After Butler threw away a couple of photos that seemingly were of him from The Carrie Diaries, Kravitz asked him an awkward question.

Oh no, are you on that show?

When Butler confirmed that he was part of The Carrie Diaries, Kravitz admitted she didn’t realize that. “Okay, sorry. Didn’t know that.” Butler then got confirmation from the person monitoring the lie detector machine that Kravitz was being honest. After Butler responded by saying, “Wow.” twice, Kravitz summed the moment up with one word.

Oops.

What This Means For The Sex And The City Franchise

Throughout television history, there have been very few shows that have been as successful as Sex and the City. The fact that Zoë Kravitz could quote Sex and the City upon request at a moment’s notice shows just how much people care about the franchise.

Conversely, Kravitz inadvertently proving how little she knows about one of Sex and the City’s spin-offs is just as indicative of a problem for the franchise. Of course, that isn’t the only thing that Kravitz did that proved how artistically unsuccessful the Sex and the City spin-offs have been.

Later in the same Vanity Fair video, Butler asked Kravitz if she was, “relieved” that And Just Like That was ending. Despite being a Sex and the City superfan, Kravitz professed having “mixed feelings” about And Just Like That ending.

Within a minute of the video, Kravitz proved she didn’t know Butler starred in The Carrie Diaries and didn’t say she was sad And Just Like That is ending. Both of those moments coming from a self-professed superfan of the original show says a lot about how people feel about Sex and the City’s spin-offs.

Our Take On Zoë Kravitz Insulting Austin Butler’s Show

While watching the video, it is very clear that Kravitz didn’t intend to insult Butler or The Carrie Diaries. Instead, Kravitz clearly just had no idea that Butler starred in The Carrie Diaries when she dissmissed the show. Still, that doesn’t take away from how awkward it feels to watch that moment play out.

To Butler’s credit, he was classy and seemingly sought to downplay the moment Kravitz insulted the show. Still, the fact that Butler threw away the photos of himself from The Carrie Diaries didn’t end that part of the discussion. At least Austin Butler’s placid nature didn’t allow the moment to get any worse.
