Alice in Borderland Season 3 Is Netflix’s Most-Watched Japanese Original

Alice in Borderland season 3 solidifies a major milestone for the series, with the wait for a renewal continuing. After a nearly three-year break, Alice in Borderland season 3 debuted on Netflix in late September. The episodes pick up after the twisty Alice in Borderland season 2 finale. It ultimately concludes on an even bigger cliffhanger, which calls out for a continuation.

Featuring the returns of lead actors Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya as Arisu and Usagi, respectively, the most recent chapter of the manga adaptation ends with the tease that the story could go global. Alice in Borderland season 4 has yet to be renewed. But a well-established milestone offers reason for optimism.

As noted by What’s On Netflix, which tracks the streamer’s releases, Alice in Borderland season 3 is the most-watched non-anime Japanese series among Netflix Originals. The show already earned that title with its previous installments, though the third season cemented it further.

With a renewal for Alice in Borderland season 4 still pending, the show’s status as Netflix’s most-watched Japanese Original bodes well for its further. Since its debut on September 25, season 3 has spent 5 weeks in the streamer’s Top 10 list for TV shows. On the whole, the six episodes were viewed for more than 142 million hours. They were also the #1 show, globally, for the week of September 28 to October 5.

The numbers are less than the 228.9 million hours viewed for season 2 in a six-week period. But it’s ahead of 182.9 million hours viewed for season 1, which occurred over 11 weeks and had two more episodes to add to the runtime. This points to the fact that there is still a strong interest in the fantasy survival thriller, which is based on the works of Haro Aso.

Arisu and Usagi in Alice in Borderland season 3's finale

Alice in Borderland season 3 ends by previewing an American waitress named Alice, teasing that the next chapter of the story could go global. There has been no news on whether Netflix is planning an international expansion of the adaptation, but these numbers add to the argument that there’s a global audience for the series.

The cast of Alice in Borderland season 3 expands, welcoming Hayato Isomura, Ayaka Miyoshi, Katsuya Maiguma, Koji Ohkura, Risa Sudou, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, and Tina Tamashiro, among a host of others. Things have been quiet about whether they’ll be back for another round. But analyzing the signs, it may only be a matter of time before an announcement is unveiled.
