Outer Banks season 5 is officially in production, and fresh cast pictures have been released to celebrate the news. OBX has been a wild adventure since the start, but season 4 truly took that to a new level. As our favorite Pogues reluctantly teamed up with Rafe (Drew Starkey) in Morocco to find Blackbeard’s long-lost (and fictional) Blue Crown, things went tragically sideways when they were pursued by JJ’s (Rudy Pankow’s) Kook and treasure-obsessed bio-dad, Groff (J. Anthony Crane). Now, they’re headed to Portugal to seek the most delicious treasure of all: revenge.
After Outer Banks season 4’s shocking and emotional ending, the remaining cast members, including Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Drew Starkey, and Carlacia Grant, are suiting up in their most breezy Pogue outfits one last time. Outer Banks season 5 is set to be the show’s last and is expected to premiere on Netflix next year. Check out the new cast pictures below.
What This Means For Outer Banks Season 5
Someone’s Missing From Those Pictures
In the feature-length season 4 finale, JJ Maybank’s nine lives were finally spent. All the Outer Banks characters have had a brush with death at one point or another, to the point where it’s almost impossible to believe that they’re still alive and well (Sarah, in particular, has been through the wringer). But it’s genuinely sad that JJ, who only just found out the truth about his parents, and who was going to be godfather to John B and Sarah’s baby, will never be able to protect his friends or hunt treasure again.
Netflix’s ultimate summer series will honor JJ’s legacy and ride-or-die friendships with his fellow Pogues. Let’s see how they navigate this new reality.
Fans of the show were quick to point out Rudy Pankow’s absence in OBX‘s new season 5 production photos, with most lamenting JJ’s death. Many Instagram users agreed that JJ was the show’s best character, and that watching the final season will be a strange experience without his overwhelming, fun, and blisteringly loyal presence. Surely, though, Netflix’s ultimate summer series will honor JJ’s legacy and ride-or-die friendships with his fellow Pogues. Let’s see how they navigate this new reality.
Our Take On Outer Banks Season 5
JJ’s Absence Will Influence The Entire Final Season
If revenge is the treasure they’re hunting in season 5, there’s no better person to lead the pack than Kiara this time. It’ll be interesting to see her take on a bigger role in the chase and how she deals with her grief while keeping everyone’s heads above water. The Pogues’ biggest strength is their friendship, but it’s also their biggest weakness. If they let JJ’s death overwhelm them, will they be able to function? How will they make Groff pay for what he did while honoring what JJ stood for?

With Outer Banks season 5 as the show’s last, there is a lot to resolve for the Netflix series.
Then there’s Rafe, who will not be as emotionally burdened as the rest of the team and will, as such, probably be the stability (who knew we’d ever say that about Rafe Cameron?) they all need – whether they like it or not. I’m not convinced Rafe deserves a full-on redemption arc, but I am curious to see where his relationship with his sister goes in the show’s final season. Wherever their hunt for Groff leads this lovable group of Pogues, JJ’s death will be the driving force behind Outer Banks‘ last outing.
Outer Banks season 5 will arrive on Netflix in 2026.
