The Daily Show has appointed a brand-new host for the Tuesday through Thursday slot, despite Jon Stewart hinting at a possible cancellation for the show. The hugely successful talk show has run on Comedy Central since 1996, and Stewart had a long-term tenure as host from 1999 to 2015, after which he departed, before returning in 2024.
Despite the growth in viewership following Stewart’s return, the host has intimated recently that The Daily Show could face the same cancellation fate as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the show, a new host of The Daily Show has just been appointed.
Per THR, Josh Johnson will take over the hosting gig for The Daily Show in the coming days. He previously worked as a writer for NBC’s Tonight Show before becoming a correspondent on the Comedy Central series. He will join a host rotation of Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic, with Stewart sticking to his typical Monday slot.
What This Means For The Future Of The Daily Show
There Don’t Seem To Be Immediate Concerns
Though the potential threat of cancellation looms, despite 12 Emmy nominations, it doesn’t seem to be changing plans for the show, and appointing a new host shows future planning. The fact that there’s a rotation of hosts is a great way to keep things fresh and add new dynamics to the show. Ultimately, this could see its popularity continue.

Johnson is a fine choice, as he has been involved with the show for some time. His background in stand-up comedy should ensure he brings a strong comedic element to his hosting slots. The Daily Show is a show that thrives on humor, wit, and satire, so an experienced, but still up-and-coming comedian like Johnson is the perfect choice for it.
Our Take On The Fate Of The Daily Show
Nothing Is Confirmed But Recent Events Are Cause For Concern
Recent events, including the cancellation of The Late Show and the deteriorating state of late-night talk shows, mean that there is cause for concern about the future of The Daily Show. Despite how popular the show is, there are events that could conspire that result in the show getting the chop, and a lot may depend on Donald Trump’s influence.
How much of an impact ratings will have in saving the show is unclear, but Stewart’s active criticism of Trump’s Paramount lawsuit has not could go down badly with the President, who openly took aim at Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, and who was supportive of The Late Show‘s cancelation, and he may push for a similar fate for The Daily Show.
