Famous music director Ismail Darbar has recently come up and talked about his rocky professional relationship with the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The composer was in a conversation with Vickey Lalwani, where he admitted that he would never work on a project with the Heeramandi director again, even if he was offered Rs. 100 crore. Their relationship got strained during the making of the Netflix series Heeramandi, for which Ismail Darbar was composing music for over a year. However, some misunderstandings forced him to step away. The music composer’s decision was also impacted by some of his past projects with Bhansali on iconic films, such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas, involving Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Shah Rukh Khan. Even though the projects were a massive success, there were tensions emerging behind the screens. Issues arose, especially when there were rifts created because of casting decisions.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Salman Khan’s relationship fell out because of Shah Rukh Khan?
According to Ismail, the director’s relationship with the superstar Salman Khan went down because of him casting Shah Rukh Khan in Devdas. The composer said, “When I needed work, he gave me Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and when he needed me, I gave up all the work I had for him. He was my godfather in the industry, after all… My heart tells me that his equation with Salman soured because he hired Shah Rukh for Devdas. Salman supported him even when Khamoshi flopped. Isn’t it obvious? If I help you out twice, and the third time, you go and hire my competitor, I would be upset.”
When Dabar was asked if Salman Khan wasn’t cast in Devdas due to his rumored relationship with Aishwarya Rai, he said that he understands the public perceptions but also focused on the emotional weight that these decisions have. He said, “The news of their fights was all over the media. We used to feel bad; they were so close, they shouldn’t have been fighting. But these are all things of the past; even Salman is smart enough to never speak about it.”
Aishwarya Rai’s relationship with the film industry
During a different interview with the same host, Vickey Lalwani, ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar said that he had personally witnessed the fights that happened between Aishwarya and Salman because he lived in the same building as Aishwarya. According to him, the biggest reason Aishwarya was hurt was because of the way the entire film industry sided with Salman after their breakup. He revealed, “Her greatest hurt was being abandoned by the industry for Salman. That was her greatest hurt. She really felt bad” He continued, “That’s where her commitment to the industry actually cracked… She felt very, very betrayed by the industry.”
